What is invisolar®?

Designed with aesthetics and installation simplicity in mind, invisolar is a low-profile solar roofing system that retains the appearance and functionality of a normal tiled roof.

Standard, unaltered concrete roof tiles are laid in the usual way, with invisolar panels installed directly over the tiles as the roof is constructed. This keeps installation simple and familiar for roofers while preserving the roof’s structural integrity.

For concrete roof tile manufacturers, invisolar allows the roof to remain fully tiled, protecting tile sales volumes, while roofers benefit from a straightforward installation process that is much faster and more cost-effective than fitting conventional solar panels.

FAQs

invisolar market size graphic

The UK market for Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is growing rapidly as solar becomes an increasingly important part of new-build housing. The current UK BIPV hardware market is estimated at approximately £100 million, with the market projected to reach £122.4 million by 2030.

Around 200,000 new homes are built in the UK each year, and the move towards the Future Homes Standard and Net Zero is expected to make solar a standard feature on the vast majority of new-build properties.

BIPV Market Growth

The opportunity becomes significantly larger when installation is included. Market modelling commissioned for invisolar estimated that, under a scenario in which approximately 90% of new homes adopt BIPV, the UK new-build residential market could represent around £810–£972 million per year from 2027.

Aesthetics are also becoming increasingly important – market research found that consumers would be prepared to pay up to 20% more for a better-looking solar solution. This creates a significant opportunity for integrated solar systems that generate renewable electricity without fundamentally changing the appearance of the roof.

Research into the invisolar concept produced an exceptionally positive response. The programme included in-depth interviews with consumers and professionals including architects, roofing contractors, renewable energy specialists, energy consultants, and planners, together with an online survey involving more than 1,000 potential customers.

The reaction was almost universally positive, with respondents seeing integrated solar roofing as a natural progression from conventional rooftop solar. Aesthetics emerged as a particularly important factor – consumers indicated that they would be prepared to pay up to 20% more for a better-looking solar solution than for conventional mounted solar panels.

Traditional Solar Panels in the UK

Traditional solar panels are highly visible and can significantly change the appearance of a property. invisolar is designed to blend into the roofscape, using low-profile solar panels that complement standard concrete roof tiles and retain the appearance of a normal tiled roof. Market research found aesthetics to be a major driver of demand, with consumers indicating a willingness to pay up to 20% more for a better-looking solar solution.

Key advantages include:

  • Better aesthetics – invisolar blends into the roof rather than sitting prominently above it, helping to preserve the appearance of the property.
  • Maintained roof integrity – traditional solar systems commonly use mounting systems that require roof penetrations. invisolar uses standard, unaltered concrete roof tiles and avoids unnecessary cutting or drilling of the tiles.
  • Faster installation – traditional solar panels are generally fitted after the roof has been completed. invisolar is installed as the roof is being laid, creating a simpler workflow for roofers.
  • Lower installation time and cost – the invisolar system is designed to install around 3–4 times faster than conventional solar panels, helping to reduce labour requirements.
  • A normal tiled roof – the underlying roof remains a conventional tiled roof, preserving its appearance and familiar construction method.

The result is a solar roofing system that combines better aesthetics, maintained roof integrity, and more efficient installation without fundamentally changing how the roof is built.

In-Roof BIPV in the UK

Many Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems improve on conventional mounted solar panels, but they can still be visually prominent or require specialist changes to the roof. invisolar has been designed around the appearance and construction of a conventional tiled roof, allowing the solar system to blend naturally into the roofscape.

Key advantages include:

  • Better aesthetics – some BIPV products can appear noticeably blue when exposed to sunlight. invisolar is designed to complement the colour and appearance of the surrounding roof tiles, creating a more discreet, integrated finish.
  • Maintained roof integrity – some integrated solar systems require cables or fixings to pass through roof tiles. invisolar uses standard, unaltered concrete roof tiles and avoids unnecessary cutting or drilling of the tiles.
  • Penetration-free installation – the invisolar system attaches directly over the laid tiles, maintaining roof continuity and water drainage without unnecessary structural penetrations.
  • Durable construction – unlike semi-flexible solar products that use plastic front layers, invisolar uses industry-standard glass, supporting greater long-term reliability and durability.
  • Familiar roofing method – rather than replacing large sections of the tiled roof with a separate solar system, invisolar retains the underlying tiled roof and is installed as part of the normal roofing process.
  • Simpler installation – the system is designed around the way roofers already work, reducing the need for specialist roof layouts, flashings, or substantial changes to conventional roofing methods.

The result is a more discreet, durable, and roofing-friendly BIPV solution that generates solar energy while preserving the appearance and integrity of a traditional tiled roof.

The current invisolar system is progressing through an official certification programme with BRE and KIWA.

The certification roadmap includes mounting-system approval to British MCS 012, together with IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 testing.

invisolar has also progressed through field validation, with several roof installations successfully completed and fully operational in Denmark. This provides valuable real-world experience alongside the formal testing and certification programme.

invisolar was designed and patented by Roof Tiles Technology Ltd (RTT), working in collaboration with experts in solar technology.

Roof Tiles Technology Ltd was established in the UK by Antonio Lanzoni and Stewart Brown, bringing together more than 70 years of combined experience in the UK and international roof tile markets.

RTT was created to develop practical, scalable innovations specifically for the roofing industry. Today, the company combines expertise across roofing, engineering, R&D, supply chain, and commercial strategy.

RTT’s aim is to work with a select number of industry partners, giving them access to:

  • Patented invisolar technology and know-how
  • A differentiated BIPV product range
  • Technical and certification support
  • Pilot project and integration support
  • Installation guidance and training
  • A route into the rapidly growing solar roofing market

The result is a partnership model designed to help established roofing businesses expand into integrated solar without having to develop an entirely new system from scratch.

A partnership with Roof Tiles Technology Ltd (RTT) provides an efficient route into the growing solar roofing market, using a patented system designed specifically for established roofing and concrete tile businesses.

Key advantages include:

  • Faster market entry – invisolar provides access to an already-developed BIPV system, reducing the need for lengthy in-house R&D.
  • Patented technology – RTT owns the intellectual property for the invisolar attachment system and design, with partners gaining access to the technology and patent protection.
  • Low-capex integration – the system has been designed so that existing concrete roof tile production lines do not need to be fundamentally changed, with only a light assembly process required.
  • Extensive roofing expertise – RTT was founded by experienced professionals from the concrete roof tile industry and combines deep sector knowledge with engineering, R&D, supply chain, and commercial expertise.
  • Complete know-how and support – RTT supports partners with certification, pilot projects, technical integration, roof design, installation manuals, training, and marketing.
  • New revenue potential – invisolar allows manufacturers to retain their core concrete roof tile sales while adding a higher-value solar-ready product and an additional revenue stream.
  • Flexible partnership structure – the operating model can be adapted to existing manufacturing, distribution, and solar supply-chain arrangements.

The result is a partnership model designed to help established roofing businesses enter BIPV more quickly, with lower development risk and the technical, commercial, and operational support needed to scale.
